In Frédéric Chopin’s time jazz did not exist and the composer could not possibly think of his own music swinging. Yet many modern musicians see his nocturnes, polonaises and waltzes as typical jazz standards calling for improvisation. It is worth noting that the creative life of the Polish genius was full of spontaneous writing as he was well known for elaborate rearrangements of his own and other composers’ music. Within this context, jazzy Chopin is a continuation of the immeasurable tradition of improvisation. Adding touches of wit and fantasy to Chopin’s music has opened a space of new ideas in between classical music and jazz.
Chopin Jazz Inn offers an inspiring revelation of the music written almost two centuries ago as it begins a new life enriched by jazz.
“This project is particularly important to me for all the energy and efforts spent,” says singer Evelina Sašenko who created jazz arrangements together with pianist Dmitri Golovanov. The project also features striking verses from Chopin’s Piano by a Polish poet, Cyprian Norwid.
A CD of the best pieces of the project was released in 2010.

Evelina Sašenko (b. 1987) won her first prizes as a singer when, still a schoolgirl at the time, she took part in a Lithuanian children song competition and two contests for young singers in Poland. A professional jazz vocalist, she has created several stylistically diverse musical projects, including A Love Story after Edith Piaf, Chopin Jazz Inn, All That Cabaret, and The Fire of Tango. She has taken part in a number of musicals and other programmes, such as Aida, Cabaret, With Love to Barbra Streisand, Maria de Buenos Aires, Streets of Montmartre, Can You Feel the Love Tonight, Love Songs, Dazzling Musicals of Broadway, and Alice in Vilniusland.
Evelina has performed with the country’s best orchestras. In 2011 she won the national finals of the Eurovision Song Contest and sang for Lithuania in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Lively and enthusiastic, Dmitri Golovanov (b. 1983) has already earned the reputation of one of the country’s best jazz pianists. A universal musician, he plays as if to demonstrate his thorough understanding of the language of jazz and a willingness to cross the limits of tradition.
Critically acclaimed in Lithuania and beyond, Dmitri playfully travels across different styles of and genres, including improvisational free jazz and experimental electroacoustic music.
He won the Vilnius Jazz Young Power Competition in 2007 and took the Grand Prix of Jazz Improvisation, the contest for young jazz pianists, the following year in Vilnius. He took part in the semi-finals of the Montreaux Jazz Piano Solo Competition in 2012 and became the finalist of the European Jazz Competition in Rotterdam in 2013.

Donatas Bagurskas (b. 1981) was a lead double bassist in the Vilnius-based St. Christopher’s Chamber Orchestra and a member of Kremerata Baltica, a chamber orchestra established by Gidon Kremer. Currently he is a principal double bass of the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra.
As a soloist, he has played with several Lithuanian orchestras including the 2009 world premiere of Concert for Double Bass by Denis Grotski, a Lithuanian-born composer who wrote the piece for Donatas.
His other landmark performances include Lithuanian premieres of Gran Duo Concertante by Giovanni Bottesini he played with violinist Sergei Krylov, Divertimento Concertante for Double Bass and Orchestra by Nino Rota, Concert for Double Bass, Male Choir and Orchestra “Farewell with Saint Petersburg” by Gavin Bryars and a number of other compositions.
Donatas has been lecturing at the Music Academy of Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas and the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre in Vilnius since 2012.
