Jazz beyond borders with Erik Truffaz and friends’ in Elegia Session!

The artistry of jazz trumpeter Erik Truffaz (1960) is spreading across Europe, where he is busy performing on a tight schedule.  The fusion of jazz temper, modern rhythms and experiments – Truffaz is all that and a great deal more. It’s a joyful news that the outstanding passion and feel of music will be available in Riga, where Truffaz only performance in Baltic States is going to take place.

It is no coincidence that Truffaz comes to play for us exactly 10 years after the first visit to Latvia. Back then – on October 18th, 2013 - he performed for music lovers in a small club in old town. Loads of people got to know about that only afterwards, so let the anniversary snow be a “second chance” for many of them!

The journey to the world of sound where classical jazz tradition merges with playful improvisation spiced up by vibrant urban rhythms is to take place in the prestige historical house of Riga Latvians Society. Located in the very center of Riga, just next to the Academy of Music, the venue with long cultural history will open its doors for another piece of classical and yet outstandingly modern arts’ act.

Born in Switzerland, in 1960, Truffaz early stepped into the professional music scene, mainly because of being the son a professional sax player and had his own dance band. Truffaz felt special respect to the legendary trumpet player Miles Davis, who established as his authority and musical influences. Studies at the Geneva Conservatory Truffaz expanded Truffaz musical repertoire by Mozart and Verdi pieces and soon he was ready to take part in L' Orchestre de Suisse Romande 's, what was followed by establishing his own band Orange which played mostly Erik’s own compositions.

With his second album Truffaz signed the famous label Blue Note. It marked entering the field of jazz-fusion and led to new success. The nineties was a steady growth period for Truffaz talent. He actively collaborated with a wide range of musicians, not necessary from the jazz scene. Truffaz took part in the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival, toured Europe, Russia and Central America. He continuously surprised his fans with original collaboration albums, involving a wide spectrum of artists, from Tunisian revolutionary sufi singer Mounir Troudi to Amon Tobin and Murcof, the players of the experimental music scene.

In the Elegia Session Truffaz will meet two more outstanding musical talents – SIG (piano, cello) and Artis Orubs (percussions).

SIG aka Siegfried is a French musician of Arab descent. He plays and composes for cello and piano, and his creative search is ever on-going process. Recently SIG proved that combination of jazz and hip-hop does not conflict with the classical compositions quadruple sonatas - Sonata Freespeed, published by the music publishing Makasound. Siegfried is also a photographer and filmmaker - 2004th Film Festival Arsenals had sold out the shows of his cult film Sansa .

Artis Orubs is one of the most impressing percussion performers in Latvia. He is a masterful drummer and his skills have been polished in Amsterdam Conservatory as well as in Amsterdam’s legendary jazz club scene. Artis does not limit his work to classical jazz and improvisational lines, he also works on composition.

Erik Truffaz and friends’ Elegia Session will take place on October 18, at 20:00. Entrance – from 19:00.
