Brian Marsella Trio plays The Book of Angels (USA)

Brian Marsella - piano
Trevor Dunn - bass
Kenny Wollesen - drums

John Zorn’s institute The Stone travels through Europe, landing at the Vilnius Jazz Festival with Zorn compositions from the Masada series by pianist Brian Marsella, in trio with Trevor Dunn and Kenny Wollesen.

16 Masada compositions performed by a dynamic piano trio featuring Brian Marsella, the astonishing and passionate pianist from Banquet of the Spirits, Zion80 and The Flail. Joined here by the classic Masada rhythm section of Trevor Dunn and Kenny Wollesen, the performances are powerful, focused and incredibly varied. Each piece presents a different musical world, referencing McCoy Tyner, Don Pullen, Erik Satie, Conlon Nancarrow, Horace Silver, Lennie Tristano, Bill Evans, Bach, Bud Powell, Richard Twardzik, Debussy and many others. Brian Marsella Trio shows are probably among the most amazing piano trio concerts you can attend at the moment. There is nothing like this trio!

John Zorn is generally recognized as one of the great musical innovators from New York since the 1960s. His music encompasses many styles, from adventurous group improv (Cobra) to intense noise rock (Naked City) and acoustic jazz (Masada). He collaborated with a wide range of musicians, from Lou Reed to Misha Mengelberg. For many years the alto saxophonist and composer has organized concert from his club The Stone, which has recently moved to the New School Glass Box Theatre. But The Stone will also tour through Europe this fall, with concert at, among others, Vilnius Jazz Festival.

Breaking rules, experimenting with sounds: in its continual exploration, Ping Machine enjoys sharing the thrill of being on stage with the audience. With the intention of integrating aspects of the music that has inspired him in his compositions (Stravinsky, Messiaen, Grisey, Gil Evans, Frank Zappa, Steve Coleman, Meshuggah), Frédéric Maurin transcends the limits of the genre: using spectral techniques, melodic and harmonic exploration, confronting blocks of sound and orchestral polyrhythm. The artistic line is to carry the audience through original soundscapes that allow the soloists to go beyond the traditional framework of improvisation.

The sound created by the orchestra is neither a mental thing nor a speech intended to be interpreted: it always contains something that communicates physically, beyond words and concepts. The collective dimension of the ensemble, the energy and generosity of each individual produce music that is radical and powerful. A music that brings to light an underlying modernity, using complex contemporary devices but always in a subtle manner, never forgetting the audience and keeping focused on a natural flow, allowing them to perceive, through the complexity of the material, what lies beyond the sound.
