It is the seventh feast in the series of concerts that has been launched by Mindaugas Bačkus, artistic director of the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra, in January 2016. “A Feast of the Harpsichord” honours the instrument that was at the height of popularity during the Renaissance and Baroque eras. It was brought to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 16th century where it was usually played by foreign musicians in the court chapels owned by the royal family and the nobility. Poet and priest Kristijonas Donelaitis (1714‒1780) was also known for playing and making harpsichords at his leisure.

This instrument is played by means of a keyboard, which activates a row of levers that in turn trigger jacks with plectra made of quill, leather, or metal, which pluck metal strings. The resulting sound is clear and sharp; power, with which the player presses keys, has virtually no effect on the volume. The harpsichord was widely used as solo instrument and part of smaller and larger instrumental ensembles in Renaissance and Baroque music. The great bulk of the standard repertoire for harpsichord was written during its first historical flowering, starting with music for solo harpsichord, part of a continuo in trio sonatas, and ending with harpsichord concerti. Johann Sebastian Bach was a pioneer of the latter genre, both in works designated as such, and in the harpsichord parts of his instrumental concerti. In the 20th century, it made a resurgence, being used in historically informed performances of older music and in new compositions.

“A Feast of the Harpsichord” will feature four renowned harpsichordists from Lithuania and neighbouring countries: Goska Isphording (Poland), Reinut Tepp (Estonia), Vaiva Eidukaitytė-Storastienė and Vilimas Norkūnas (Lithuania). Together with the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra, they will perform works by Joseph Haydn, Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, Alfred Schnittke and Justė Janulytė. As many as four beautiful harpsichords will adorn the stage of the Klaipėda Concert Hall during this concert, to be played all together in Bach’s Concerto for four harpsichords in A minor. This spectacular concert is simply not to be missed!
