“Building a Musical Bridge: Lithuania – Germany”

Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra
Artistic Director and Soloist Mindaugas Bačkus (cello)
Soloist Guoda Gedvilaitė (piano)

Programme: Clara Schumann, Robert Schumann, Felix Mendelssohn, Raminta Šerkšnytė, Nijolė Sinkevičiūtė

This programme, offered to you by the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra and pianist Guoda Gedvilaitė, builds a musical bridge between Lithuania and Germany. On the 8th of February it will be presented at the Klaipėda Concert Hall and a week later performed as part of the Orchestra’s tour in Germany.

The artistic partnership between Guoda Gedvilaitė and the Orchestra from Klaipėda launched many years ago. The Orchestra, distinguished for its technical prowess, creative synergy and artistic élan, has unfailingly captivated its audiences with unexpected experiments and engaging interpretations of classical and modern works. Lithuanian-German pianist Guoda Gedvilaitė might be characterized in similar lines: renowned for her unorthodox ideas concerning the repertoire and presentation of music, she often challenges the very canons of classical music performance.

The programme “Building a Musical Bridge: Lithuania – Germany” features music by Lithuanian and German composers from across the epochs and styles. Curiously enough, three of them happen to be women. The first of the three is pianist and composer Clara Schumann, a multi-talented muse of her husband, famous composer Robert Schumann, and other artists of the time. The programme offers her Piano Concerto.

Now in her mid-forties, Lithuanian composer Raminta Šerkšnytė has already been awarded the Lithuanian National Prize for Culture and Arts. The programme features her graduation piece De profundis for string orchestra.

The music of Nijolė Sinkevičiūtė is distinguished for its vivid imagery. She wrote Kryžkelės apeigos (Rites of Passing the Crossroads) for cello and strings especially for the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra and its artistic director, Mindaugas Bačkus.
The programme will be rounded off by Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor.
