Programme: Gintaras Sodeika Fluxus Requiem (world premiere)

The “Night Bells,” starting at 9 pm, will round off this year’s programme with the appearance of Gintaras Sodeika, a composer who is frequently heard perform on the recently installed and biggest carillon in Lithuania – the Vilnius Carillon. We know this artist as the collaborator in interdisciplinary projects, organiser of happenings events, and theatre composer who has contributed music to quite a few theatre productions by probably the best known Lithuanian theatre director, Oskaras Koršunovas.
This concert programme will include the world premiere of Sodeika’s Fluxus Requiem, which, according to the composer, is “a (non)funeral (non)mass for mixed choir, brass quintet, soloist (movement and voice), carillon, birds, insects and earthworms. This year we will celebrate fortieth anniversary of the death of Jurgis Mačiūnas (1931–1978), a progenitor of the Fluxus movement. The Fluxus Requiem is dedicated to Mačiūnas and the artistic movement he had initiated and instigated.”
The movement takes its name from the Latin word meaning ‘flowing,’ for Fluxus art is primarily a living art that is in constant change. The life of Mačiūnas itself was like a ‘work in progress’: constantly changing, beginning and ending with every new event, revolting against the commercial art market, elitism, and the conventions of both art and society. He lived by creating himself anew each time, by playing games and entertaining his peers.
The crew for this intriguing premiere also includes the Klaipėda Choir “Aukuras”, the Klaipėda Brass Quintet, and actor Benas Šarka. Alfonsas Vildžiūnas will mount the conductor’s podium, while Eugenijus Sabaliauskas will be responsible for lighting design.
