Mindaugas Bačkus, artistic director of the Klaipėda chamber orchestra, and Vilmantas Kaliūnas, oboist and conductor, were classmates at the National M. K. Čiurlionis School of Arts in Vilnius. They currently live in different towns and even countries and rather seldom have an opportunity to meet each other, either on concert stage or in life. “Rays of German Music” will be their first programme, in which Kaliūnas will conduct the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra.
Kaliūnas says, “Mindaugas and I have been discussing our possible collaboration for many years. A couple of ideas have ripened almost to fruition but something would always upset our plans. But at last we managed to coordinate our schedules and programme details. I can’t wait to visit Klaipėda. I’m all agog about coming to Klaipėda. The Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra managed to generate quite a buzz even in Germany, and so I’m very glad to seize the opportunity and embark on a collaboration with this orchestra. Having lived in Germany for nearly thirty years, I’m well familiar with all works featured in the programme “Rays of German Music,” which can be said to form a musical bridge between my two ‘homes’ in Lithuania and in Germany.”
The solo clarinet in this programme is entrusted to Karolis Kolakauskas who made his first steps towards a professional career at the Eduardas Balsys Gymnasium of Arts in Klaipėda.
