What is so exceptional about the closing concert of the 18th season at the Klaipėda Concert Hall is first of all related to the performers who will team up for this particular occasion featuring conductor Ričardas Šumila (who had to replace Modestas Pitrėnas at short notice), violinist Vilhelmas Čepinskis, and cellist Mindaugas Bačkus. Along with the latter two accomplished musicians, this concert features two collectives of string players under their artistic leadership, the Camerata Solaris Chamber Orchestra of Šiauliai and the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra, respectively. Both artistic directors have drawn up a programme combining works that are rarely heard but nevertheless have special cultural significance. Bačkus said, “not only did we devise a programme but also had to arrange selected works for an ensemble twice the size of a single chamber orchestra. You see when we joined the two string orchestras, we ended up with a company of nearly 40 players. So Vilhelmas is currently working on the orchestration and adaption of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis’ String Quartet in C minor for large string orchestra. Another Lithuanian
work in the programme is written by Vidmantas Bartulis, our late colleague, friend and a wonderful composer. To round off the programme, the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra will perform John Tavener’s The Protecting Veil for cello and strings, in which Kornelija Kupšytė, a young cellist from Klaipėda, will appear as a soloist.” A talented and charismatic performer possessing a distinctive style, she is the section principal of the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra and the final-year student at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre where she is going to complete her Master’s degree soon. “Collaboration between artists from different generations in an orchestra is one of the most efficient and important catalysts for change on an endless path towards artistic excellence,” Bačkus asserted. Ričardas Šumila, who is currently appointed Chief Conductor at the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre, will conduct his first ever programme prepared with the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra.
The programme performed in turns and together by two orchestras will culminate in the performance of the 43-minute concert piece written by British composer John Tavener for the 1989 Promenade season. He had this to say in the programme notes for this piece: “In my piece entitled The Protecting Veil for cello and strings, I have tried to capture some of the almost cosmic power of the Mother of God. The cello represents The Mother of God and never stops singing throughout. One can think of the strings as a gigantic extension of her unending song. The music falls into eight continuous sections and use is made of the eight Byzantine tones. Various Feasts were in my mind as I composed; for instance the second is related to her birth, the third section to the Annunciation, the fourth to the Incarnation, the fifth (which is totally unaccompanied) to her lament at the foot of the cross, the sixth to the Resurrection, the seventh to her Dormition, and the first and last sections to her cosmic beauty and power over a shattered world. The PROTECTING VEIL ends with a musical evocation of the tears of the Mother of God.”
The live performance of Tavener’s music will be accompanied by the video projection specially designed by Vladas Šerstobojevas.
