The “Evening Bells” will start ringing at 6 pm. This concert will be dominated by musicians from Kaunas, including carillonneur Julius Vilnonis and the Kaunas Big Band under the leadership or Liutauras Janušaitis. Among other compositions, the programme will feature Music for Five, a piece in two movements by Julius Vilnonis, which emerged as a joint effort between five performers agog over the exploration of new timbral combinations. This year it was arranged for bells and big band thereby yielding more intensity and richness of tone. “Everything is moving and changing,” says the renowned Lithuanian carillonneur and composer.
Another piece, Eos by Liutauras Janušaitis, was composed specifically with the Kaunas Big Band and carillon in mind. Jazz saxophonist and composer who has been educated in Lithuania and the United States and has ever since continued to take active part in the local and international jazz music scene, Janušaitis asserts that his work’s title refers to the Greek goddess of the dawn.
For a quarter of a century the Kaunas Big Band has been one of the prime participants and exponents of the Lithuanian jazz music scene. It has been a playground for several generations of most gifted Lithuanian jazz musicians. It is now hard to imagine Lithuanian jazz festivals and events without this band. The Kaunas Big Band is equally at home at the prestigious concert halls and in large arenas, appearing with the celebrated jazz masters and with the pop singers. But the band’s most earnest ambition is not so much about causing a sensation but more about professionalism and popularization of jazz music. The beginnings of the Kaunas Big Band, in 1992, almost coincide in time with the restoration of the independent Lithuanian state. Today it continues to improvise the chronicle of its activities as one of the resident collectives under the umbrella concert organisation “Kauno Santaka.”
