Sun & Sea, a singing beach in Vilnius

Sun & Sea is a singing beach that the audience observes from above, from the solar perspective. In the work, created by the three artists Rugilė Barzdžiukaitė, Vaiva Grainytė, and Lina Lapelytė, performers dressed in brightly coloured bathing suits lie under the artificial sun, building sand castles, reading books, playing games, having snacks, and singing. In the bright summer daylight, they share their daily worries, memories, the composition of sunscreen, and plans of making an omelette in the morning. But the image of a lazy vacation is just a carefree surface: bodies exposed to time and heat hide a premonition of the end – the transience of Earth and people. Themes of climate change, corporeality, and universal fatigue of the human and the planet unfold in the work in a captivating and mildly ironic way, intensified by an unsettling soundtrack.

Sun & Sea, which stunned audiences at the 2019 Venice Biennale and received the top award, the Golden Lion, maneuvers between many genres: tableau vivant and installation, contemporary opera and performance, experimental theater and sound sculpture. Over the past four years, Sun & Sea has toured over 33 cities in 26 countries, and this year has played in Sydney, Santiago de Chile, Buenos Aires, Taipei, Vienna, among other places. In Vilnius the piece will be staged in an exclusive venue. Moving along the 8-storey spiral ramp driveway, the audience observes the humans sunbathing on the sandy beach from different distances – zooming in and out.

The Golden Lion-winning piece will be performed on 14–18 December in Lithuanian with the possibility to follow the libretto in English.

Sun & Sea tickets go on sale from 14 November on Bilietai.lt website
