Vilnius City Dance Theatre “Low Air” presents the premiere “Two Steps Forward, One Step Back” (chor. Joseph Simon). This is the first production by “Low Air” duo Airida Gudaitė and Laurynas Žakevičius featuring a foreign choreographer. Rooted in breaking, Joseph Simon’s work explores the intersections of ballet, house, and contemporary dance cultures, seeking dialogue between their distinct techniques and philosophies.

In “Two Steps Forward, One Step Back”, Joseph collaborates with four young-generation Lithuanian dancers who completed their dance studies abroad and have strong foundations in both classical and street dance. Two of them are Low Air alumni: Ugnė Irena Laurinavičiūtė studied dance at AHK – Amsterdam University of the Arts, and Vaiva Paukštė at Codarts University of the Arts in Rotterdam. The creative team was further enriched by Lithuanian dancers returning from abroad: Gabrielle Emily Aidulis, who studied at ArtEZ University of the Arts in the Netherlands, and Urtė Groblytė, trained in contemporary dance at P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels.

Joseph Simon’s latest work “Two Steps Forward, One Step Back” emerged from his ongoing research cycle “Ballet Fantasies”. It explores alternative forms of ballet informed and transformed by street- and club dance cultures, particularly house dance. The piece explores how opposing worlds can coexist within the body. In relation to aesthetics and technique but also to questions of authority and agency, tradition and progress, and the relation to lightness and weight.
