THE SONATA OF THE SERPENT Tribute to Čiurlionis

The landscapes of the Curonian Spit, the presence of nature and the artistic world of famous Lithuanian composer and painter Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis come together in the piano recital Sonata of the Serpent.

The creative legacy of M. K. Čiurlionis has moved the world last year - celebration of his 150th birth anniversary invited Lithuania to contemplate and present his creative life worldwide.

The Sonate of the Serpent offers a retrospective look into the music world of Čiurlionis beginning with a musical dedication from Giedrius Kuprevičius to his four-part cycle of paintings of the same title. This work became the pianist’s first impulse to turn toward a period of vitality in Čiurlionis’ life.

The programme features the early Druskininkai Preludes, works from the formative years of Čiurlionis’ style, and the rarely performed piano transcription of String Quartet in C minor from his youth studies in Leipzig.

Sonata of the Serpent is a musical journey to the source of Čiurlionis’ world — where mythology, nature and human experience merge into one.
