COLOURS OF SOUND
Flute, piano and accordion – three instruments, three contrasting timbres and three young musicians ready to reveal the unexpected possibilities of combining their voices. In Colours of Sound at the BIRŠTONAS SUMMER OF MUSIC festival, the performing forces will continually change: solo episodes will give way to duets, while the voices of the different instruments will merge in a shared musical conversation.
Polina Chistova and Rugilė Melytė perform as the flute and piano duo Cantabile, formed at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre. The ensemble has become a creative space in which the young musicians search for a distinctive sound and the piano acts not as an accompaniment to the flute, but as an equal partner.
The performers were invited to Birštonas after a concert in Vilnius, where their programme captivated the audience with its accomplished, sensitive and colourful interpretation. The lightness, flexibility and variety of timbres in Polina Chistova’s flute playing blend naturally with Rugilė Melytė’s attentive musicianship and sensitive rendering of the music’s changing moods and phrasing.
Accordionist Edgaras Dičpinigaitis will bring further colours to the concert. He graduated from the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, where he studied in the class of Professor Raimondas Sviackevičius, and continued his studies with the renowned accordionist and teacher Mika Väyrynen at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. A prize-winner at international competitions, Dičpinigaitis teaches at the Trakai School of Arts, performs as a soloist and ensemble musician, and participates in classical, contemporary and improvised music projects.
Polina Chistova and Edgaras Dičpinigaitis have performed together before, and the Birštonas concert will therefore also feature the unusual combination of flute and accordion. The flute’s light, transparent timbre will blend with the rich, breathing sound of the accordion.
The programme brings together music from different periods and styles. It includes works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Domenico Scarlatti, Edvard Grieg, Franz Doppler, Philippe Gaubert, George Enescu, Juozas Pakalnis and other composers. This music will allow the young performers to demonstrate not only their technical accomplishment, but also their imagination, sensitivity to timbre, ensemble awareness and ability to shape a concert as a constantly evolving musical narrative.
Colours of Sound introduces young musicians whose programmes combine the academic tradition with freedom of interpretation. Music from different periods and unexpected instrumental combinations promise a colourful festival evening.
