The Lithuanian Modern Pentathlon Federation (LŠPF) has implemented a long-cherished plan – it has been granted the right to host the World Championship in Lithuania. The most important sports event in Lithuania this year will take place in Kaunas. Moreover, the organizers promise to attract not only the brightest stars of this sport but also to create a spectacular celebration for the spectators.
The Modern Pentathlon World Championship for adults will be the first Olympic-level sports event of such high caliber in Lithuania’s history. The Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM) announced only in December that our country had been given the right to host this championship. With the support of the Kaunas City Municipality and the “Žalgiris” Arena, it became possible to organize the championship from August 26 to 30 in the highest-level arena in Lithuania.
We had planned to secure the right to host the most prestigious modern pentathlon competition – the World Championship – in Lithuania in 2028, and we imagined that the best venue would be the “Žalgiris” Arena. We knew it would be a financial burden for our federation, but we were prepared and worked consistently because such a high-level event is a major recognition not only for our community but also for our country. We could not have dreamed that things would move so quickly and that we would achieve this ambitious goal already this year. Kaunas is becoming the capital of modern pentathlon, said LŠPF President Aistis Baronas.
More than 40 countries are expected to participate in the Modern Pentathlon World Championship in Kaunas, including the world’s top athletes. The final list of participants will be known approximately a month before the event. The championship will also introduce new elements. From now on, countries can enter up to eight athletes instead of four in both the men’s and women’s competitions. This will allow Lithuania’s most talented pentathletes to gain high-level competition experience in front of a home crowd. It is planned that Lithuania will be represented by eight male and eight female athletes.
This championship is a historic event for modern pentathlon and Lithuanian sports as a whole. It’s a huge celebration and responsibility to be able to host an event of this scale. The support of the home crowd will be very important and will help all Lithuanian pentathletes, said Lithuanian champion Elzė Adomaitytė.
It is difficult to find an arena worldwide, let alone in Lithuania, where all events of modern pentathlon can be held under one roof. The “Žalgiris” Arena is perfectly suited for this – during the World Championship, fencing, obstacle course, and laser-run events will be held in the main arena, while swimming will take place in the arena’s pool. Today, UIPM President Rob Stull visited the venue.
I don’t know if I could be happier – the arena is amazing. I am a new UIPM president and I’m happy that our sport shows that it is flexible. Modern pentathlon used to be a traditional outdoor sport, and now we are moving indoors while maintaining high prestige and quality. This is a big and important step forward. It’s clear that Lithuania has great traditions in modern pentathlon and has hosted many high-level championships. The “Žalgiris” Arena is fantastic and I am looking forward to the World Championship, said R. Stull.
This year, the format of modern pentathlon competitions has changed once again – the riding discipline has officially been replaced by an obstacle course, and the entire competition has been shortened to one and a half hours. These changes make modern pentathlon more attractive for both TV broadcasts and spectators. During the championship, LŠPF plans not only sports programs but also entertainment and other engaging activities for spectators to enrich their experience. In addition, the organizers are joined by the team behind Lithuania’s most important music awards, M.A.M.A., and other major events.
Over the years, modern pentathlon events have been shortened from five days to just one and a half hours, and this concept strongly captures the attention of the audience because they can be more engaged and watch everything from a single seat. The entertainment part with show elements becomes an important aspect of the short breaks between events and provides great emotions for the spectators. We are following UIPM recommendations, and the recent World Cup stage held in an indoor arena in Budapest proved that modern pentathlon events have grown into highly attractive spectacles, said J. Kinderis.
Starting tomorrow at 10 a.m., official ticket sales for all championship days will begin. Tickets will be available through Bilietai.lt.
By the way, more international modern pentathlon competitions will be held in Lithuania this summer. Before the adult World Championship, from August 21 to 24, the U19 World Championships will take place in Druskininkai, and from July 26 to 31, Kaunas will host the European U15 and U19 Championships.
